TSU asks state Govt to revoke/nullify Office Memo
Dimapur, June 20: Against the backdrop of the State Government’s Office Memorandum (OM) directing DCs/ADCs to issue Indigenous/ST/BT certificates only in the name of 14 recognized tribes, the apex student body of the Tikhir tribe, Tikhir Students’ Union today expressed dissatisfaction and termed this Office Memo undemocratic and unconstitutional.
Stating that there is no established rule(s) or whatsoever to discriminate any indigenous tribe though they may not have any representative in the state Assembly or in the Parliament, the TSU expressed wholehearted support to the Tikhir Tribal Council’s demand to revoke/nullify the Office Memo of the state Government that was issued in the local dailies on June 14 last.
In a release, TSU President, R Daniel Tikhir and Joint Secretary, Kiusuthong Tikhir stated that this hasty notification issued by the State Government, which denied the indispensable rights of the indigenous people has deeply hurt the sentiments of some yet-to-be- recognized indigenous tribes, particularly the Tikhir tribe, in the state.
It stated that Tikhir is one of the indigenous tribes of Nagaland with its unique history and distinct culture, having its own territory and existed since time immemorial hence, any move, either by the government or any organization(s) against their inalienable rights would not be tolerated.
Stating that the present issue has only added salt into the wound of the people inflicted by open discrimination and lackadaisical attitude of the state Government for many years, the TSU asked the state Government to revoke/nullify its Office Memo at the earliest and hasten up to address the demand for official recognition of their tribe without much delay, in order to avert unwanted situations which may come up out of this official notification or due to delay in delivering justice to our people.
